Book Review: The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl

I picked this up from the library today and was able to read it in one sitting. It's a kid's book with illustrations (by Quentin Blake) and a very cute story. We meet Billy who passes by an old, boarded up candy shop with a "FOR SAIL" sign on it everyday. He dreams of all the candies he'd sell if he owned this place. One day, 3 animals who run a Window Cleaning business end up buying the place and the action proceeds from there.

It was a quick and delightful read. The action moved quickly and there were lots of funny moments. My favorite was when we met an opera singing Duchess whose jewelery gets stolen by a bandit. I knew from the drawing that she had to be an opera singer! Then she sang "My Diamonds lie over the ocean, My Diamonds lie over the sea, My Diamonds lie over the ocean, Oh bring back my diamonds to me" to which everyone was so moved, that they joined in with her on the refrain! Haha! There was even a nod to Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the end!

I give The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me 4 out of 4 stars. Highly recommended for fans of Roald Dahl and independent readers who love wacky adventures.
